A Newtown footballer and neurodiversity ambassador has made his debut as a football commentator on national radio after analysing a Cymru North match for Cymru Sport.

Stephen Lewis, who is well known locally for his involvement in six-a-side football and advocacy work around neurodiversity, covered Newtown AFC’s game against Gresford Athletic last Friday.

Stephen said the opportunity to work on the broadcast was an important step as he looks to develop his role within the media side of the game.

“It was a great experience to make my debut on Cymru Sport analysing the Newtown versus Gresford game in the Cymru North,” he said.

“A big opportunity to make my debut on national radio, one I am very grateful to Steve Snelling and the team at Cymru Sport for giving me.”

Stephen has previously competed in six and seven-a-side football tournaments across the UK and currently plays in the Newtown six-a-side league.

Alongside his playing career, he also works as a neurodiversity ambassador, helping raise awareness of conditions including dyspraxia and autism. Through this work he has collaborated with former professional footballers and broadcasters, including well known football pundit Chris Kamara.

He said the support from Newtown AFC helped ensure the broadcast ran smoothly.

“Thanks to Newtown Football Club, the committee, secretary and the volunteers for providing us with the support, access and useful information before, during and after the game that contributed to a successful broadcast,” he said.

Stephen added that he hopes the experience will help him build a future in football media while continuing his involvement in the sport.

“I am looking forward to developing and learning the media side of the game that I am sure will benefit my knowledge and game understanding that can only progress me as a coach, player and commentator.”
