Newtown braces for incoming Storm Goretti

06/01/2026 @ 11:51

The Newtown area is being told to expect plenty of snow as we head towards the weekend with Storm Goretti set to make an impact.

Today (Tuesday) is providing a brief respite from the ongoing cold snap that has seen the area covered in ice and a dusting of snow, but it looks like worse is to come.

Most of Britain is covered by a yellow warning for snow and ice tomorrow (Wednesday) up until 10am, before Storm Goretti is likely to bring heavier snow across Wales and The Midlands leading to disruption and difficult travelling conditions from 6pm on Thursday through to noon on Friday.

It means more headaches for Powys parents with the children set to return to school tomorrow following their extended Christmas holidays due to two days of teacher-only days this week.

The advice is to check the Powys County Council web site for any update on school closures.

A reminder of what we can expect from a yellow warning for snow

  • Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
  • Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
  • Some rural communities could become cut off
  • Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
