Domestic abuse initiative takes action

27/12/2025 @ 10:58

A new initiative to support victims of domestic abuse is being rolled out across the Dyfed Powys Police area, ensuring help is available for people in North Powys when they need it most.

Thirty emergency bags have now been delivered for use by frontline services, providing immediate practical support to individuals and families fleeing domestic abuse. Each bag contains essential items such as toiletries, non perishable snacks and basic emergency supplies, helping victims who may have had to leave their home suddenly with little or nothing.

The scheme forms part of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s wider commitment to improving support for victims and is being delivered in partnership with Dyfed Powys Police and Dal i Godi, the commissioned Independent Domestic Violence Adviser service. Dal i Godi provides specialist support to those at high risk of harm, including safety planning and help through the criminal justice process.

Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn said the impact of the initiative was already clear. He explained that within days of the bags being distributed to the Dal i Godi service, one had already been given to a victim fleeing a domestic abuse situation, alongside a children’s pack to support their young family. He said this showed how quickly the support could make a real difference at a time of trauma.

Detective Chief Inspector Llyr Williams, from the Dyfed Powys Police Vulnerability Hub, described the emergency bags as a lifeline for people at the most critical moments of their lives. He said the contents offered comfort, dignity and practical help for those in crisis, often leaving home suddenly and under extreme pressure.

Domestic abuse charities and support services have long warned that incidents often increase during the Christmas and New Year period. Financial pressures, alcohol, increased time at home and emotional strain can all heighten risk, making access to immediate support especially important during the winter months.

For communities across North Powys, the availability of these emergency bags means victims can receive help quickly, locally and without delay, whether they are in Newtown, Welshpool or surrounding rural areas.

Anyone experiencing domestic abuse, or concerned about someone else, is urged to seek help. If you are in immediate danger, call 999.

Domestic abuse can also be reported online through Dyfed Powys Police. Free and confidential support is available from Victim Support Dyfed Powys on 0300 123 2996, Dal i Godi on 01267 221194, and the Live Fear Free Helpline, which is available 24 hours a day on 0808 80 10 800 or by text on 07860 077333.
