Students at Newtown High School joined hundreds across Powys today (Thursday) in receiving their GCSE results.

At Newtown, staff and governors said they were proud of pupils’ achievements, highlighting the hard work shown by students across all ability levels. The school reported strong outcomes across a wide range of subjects, with many pupils securing the grades needed to progress to sixth form, training or apprenticeships.

Acting Headteacher Mrs Havard said the results reflected the determination of the school community.

“This has been a truly rewarding year at Newtown High School. The tenacity and resilience shown by our students has been nothing short of inspiring. These results reflect their hard work, the unwavering support of our staff, and the strong partnership with families. We are incredibly proud of every single student and look forward to seeing them thrive in the next chapter of their journey,” she said.

Chair of Governors Rob Harper added: “These are absolutely amazing results. I am delighted that pupils have secured the grades that they needed and deserved. To all our outstanding staff, my gratitude for their commitment and expertise. Newtown High School has yet again raised the bar on exam results and standards.”

While the school highlighted a number of standout performances – including Verity Despres-Davies with 11 As and one A, and James Owen with five As, five As and one B – it stressed that the day was about celebrating the success of all students.

Other strong results came from pupils including Cari Grant, Stacey Davenport, Alex Chulovskiy and Grace Evans, alongside many more who achieved the grades required for their chosen next steps.

Across Powys, the county council also congratulated learners collecting their GCSE and Level 2 qualifications.

Cllr Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “I send my warmest congratulations to all our pupils receiving their results today. I’m extremely proud of the achievements of our learners and inspired by the stories of their hard work and determination.

"I’d also like to thank the dedicated staff in our schools who have supported learners throughout their studies, and the families who have played a vital role in encouraging and guiding their children.”

He added that students now had a range of opportunities available through the Chweched Powys (Powys6) sixth form programme, which links schools across the county to provide post-16 education options.

Sixth form applications at Newtown High School remain open, with details of courses available at www.powys6.cymru.
