Students at Newtown High School are celebrating another year of strong A-level results, with more than half gaining places at some of the UK’s top universities and almost all securing their first choice courses.
Acting headteacher Natalie Havard praised the dedication of pupils and staff as results were collected this morning. “It was a pleasure to see them celebrating some truly outstanding achievements,” she said. “We are incredibly proud and wish them every success as they take the next steps in their education and careers.”
Among the standout successes were Halle Trigg, who achieved three A grades and will study medicine at the University of Liverpool; Francesca Humphreys, who earned an A* and two A grades to secure a place at Cardiff University to study psychology; and Max Bufton, who will study sport science at Derby University after achieving an A*, a B and a C. At AS level, Jun Lin achieved four A grades.
In total, 60 per cent of this year’s pupils have been accepted into Russell Group universities.
The celebrations in Newtown come as schools across Powys marked another year of strong academic and vocational qualifications performance. Powys County Council said learners had achieved “exceptional” results, with many meeting the grades needed for university, apprenticeships or employment.
Councillor Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “Their achievements are a source of great pride, and it’s inspiring to hear their individual stories of success. Powys’ young people have exceptional talent and potential.” He also thanked teachers and families for their support throughout the students’ studies.
Nationally, top grades remain high, with 28.3 per cent of entries awarded an A or A*, the best performance since before the pandemic, and 9.4 per cent achieving an A*. More than 255,000 UK 18-year-olds have secured university places this year, with 82 per cent getting their first-choice offers.
Mrs Havard said the school’s results reflected the hard work of students, the commitment of staff and the encouragement of parents and carers. “We are so very proud,” she said. “Good luck to all of our students as they embark on the next stages of their education, careers and futures.”
