A new plaque and cherry blossom tree will be installed in Newtown’s Memorial Gardens to commemorate VJ Day.
The plans were approved at a recent full meeting of Newtown Town Council. The plaque and tree will serve as a lasting tribute to those who served in the Far East during the Second World War and to mark Victory over Japan Day.
Councillors also endorsed a commemorative event on 2 September. The event, part of a wider Second World War commemoration, will be co-hosted by Newtown History Group and the Royal British Legion. Further programme details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
