Housing developers could face enforcement officers over name

Newtown town councillors have urged planning enforcement teams to tell a local developer to change the name of their housing development.

It was agreed that the new development on the former Travis Perkins site on New Road would be called Plas Melinydd rather than the English name Millers Place.

However, Cllr Tracy Owen, said the development of social housing for Barcud, the region's housing association, which is currently under construction, had a sign calling it Millers Place.

Members of the town council's Economy and Environment Committee have this week agreed to contact the Powys County Council planning enforcement team asking them to have the sign changed.

Committee chairman, Cllr Richard Edwards said: "It has been there for quite a few months now," referring to the sign at the front of the development which is well underway.

It was the town council's suggestion during the planning application process to have a Welsh name for the development.

It followed concerns from Cllr Jackie Davies that there was an eradication of Welsh names.
