Battle of the bands in town

10/06/2018 @ 09:57

Today is the Newtown March and Open Air Brass Band Contest, with bands from across the country battling for the top spot.

Newtown Silver Band is hosting the seventh brass band contest today from 11am.

The contest will commence with the first band marching along High Street through the Town Hall gates to the park, where they will each play a hymn tune, a contest march and an entertainment piece.

All competing bands will then join together in the park as a massed band to play the march ‘Slaidburn’.

This year’s music judge is Mr Gavin Saynor, principal Eb Bass player with the famous Fairey Band and tutor with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

The deportment judge is Colour Sergeant Chris Bailey, Adult Instructor with the Band and Drums of Gwent and Powys ACF.

Newtown Silver Band is indebted to Newtown Carnival Committee for their support in hosting this event, together with the following sponsors – Newtown Town Council, JT Hughes Honda, Rees Astley Insurance, Grooms Garage, Border Software Ltd, Hanratty & Co Solicitors, Phil Jones and Russell George.
