Bringing the world to Newtown

Created on 23/12/2012 @ 17:40

One of the many great things about working at MyNewtown is being able to showcase and share the success stories and talent that have emanated from the area.

It is therefore a great pleasure for us to announce that from the New Year, local professional DJ and record producer Sonny Wharton has signed up to bring you the inside track on his own life through a monthly column.

From New York to Seoul and dozens of cities in between, Sonny has blazed a trail as one of the world’s leading DJ’s and has been rated by Fatboy Slim as his ‘producer of the year’.

And to get us in the mood ahead of his first column, Sonny introduces himself and shares his incredible 2012.

“Hello and welcome to my new monthly column exclusive to mynewtown.

To bring you up to speed on what I do, I’m a professional DJ and record producer, lucky enough to have made a career touring some of the best nightclubs and festivals across the world and from January onwards I’ll be bringing you monthly updates, news and releases from myself and some of dance music’s finest acts, alongside fresh new music from my own label Whartone Records (

I don’t really get the chance to play locally as often as I’d like so really want to use this column as a way of keeping in touch with you guys and bring some of the fun and games we have on tour back home for you to all enjoy as well.

2012 has been one of the most amazing years to date with my DJing taking me to places like New York, Ibiza, Hong Kong, Seoul and Moscow as well as hitting some of the UK’s biggest festivals including V Festival, Isle Of Wight, The Wickerman, Nozstock and of course our very own local Crash Festival in Abermule.

In the studio is where I’ve really been the busiest this year with several solo productions, a string of remixes and collaborations with some of the industry’s finest and culminating it all with me signing to the infamous Skint Records and being named as Fatboy Slim’s ‘producer of the year’ - something I could never have dreamed of even just 12 months ago!

I also want to use this to say a big thank you to everyone who turned out at Crystals in Newtown a couple of weeks ago. Obviously it was playing the pubs, clubs and parties in these muddy hills of Mid Wales where I really learnt to DJ so it was really great to come home to such a big turnout and see everyone having as good a time as I was!  If you’re up for some more I’m going to be performing at The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury on Boxing Day so it would be great to catch up with you guys again if you can make it!

I’ll leave you with a taste of my 2012 so far and an insight into what’s to come in 2013. Thanks again for all your support over the years. I hope you all have a fun, eventful Christmas and New Year, party non-stop and I’ll see you on the other side.

Sonny :)
