Pupils and parents are to get instant alerts by text, e-mail and social media if there school is closed for the day.

As winter draws nearer, and following last year's severe weather conditions during which many schools in Montgomeryshire closed for days on end, Powys County Council has introduced the new service to ensure everyone knows when their school is closed to save wasted journeys and to ensure parents are aware.

Powys County Council has launched the My Powys Account service where residents can sign up to get school closure information on the go, as and when the decision is made by the school.

The new service follows on from three severe winters where many schools in the county had to close due to extreme weather conditions.  The council is doing all it can to make it easier for residents to get school closure information as quickly as possible.

Cllr Liam Fitzpatrick, Cabinet Member for Change, Communication and Performance, said: “This new service means that school children and parents can find out quickly if their school is closed without having to phone the school or even check the website, leaving people more time to plan the day ahead.

“The improvements don’t stop here.  We are planning more services for the My Powys Account which will allow residents to sign up for other online services in the future.  This is part of a number of measures we are making to modernise services for residents.”
