The first Mid Wales select side compiled for a showpiece friendly put on a dazzling show under the impressive new floodlights of Guilsfield Football Club last night (Tuesday).
Pulled together by Montgomery Town manager Clive McNamee from seven clubs, the Select side brought the Huws Gray Alliance side’s winning run to an end.
But local football was the overwhelming winner on the night. The Select side demonstrated the depth of talent playing in the Spar Mid Wales League while the occasion signified another giant step forward for a club which has worked tirelessly over the last 20 years to improve facilities.
The Select side took the lead early on with an own goal before Gareth Mansell crashed in a 25 yarder into the top corner after 15 minutes. Llanidloes team mate Jamie Breeze left the backline for dead to slot in a third before a second own goal made it four.
Shell-shocked Guilsfield pulled one back before half time with yet another own goal and the second half proved a more balanced affair before a flowing move the length of the pitch was finished off by Montgomery’s Gaz Bromley from 25 yards to make it 5-1 to the Select.
