'Virtual' events to help cut travelling

A solution has been found for business delegates in Powys who are put off attending training seminars and workshops in the county because of the travelling time involved.

MWMG, an organisation that is run by and supports around 200 manufacturers and other businesses across Mid Wales, has secured funding to trial a series of events utilising video conferencing, starting this Friday June 22.

The Newtown-based organisation has clinched the funding from Powys Regeneration Partnership, under the Glasu Axis 4 Rural Development Programme (RDP), to run simultaneous events in Brecon, Newtown and Llandrindod Wells.

The events, which will use video conferencing facilities at the Coleg Powys campuses in Newtown, Llandrindod Wells and Brecon, aim to overcome travel time that sometimes deters business delegates from attending training seminars and workshops.

“In such a rural county as Powys, one of the problems we face is that events tend to be held in one location only and the long travelling times that are required makes it difficult for businesses to attend,” explained MWMG group manager Ceri Stephens. “.

“The sparsely populated county also makes it difficult for training and workshops to be cost-effective. This pilot programme of information dissemination and knowledge transfer workshops, conducted via video conferencing, aims to combat some of these issues.

“Coleg Powys already has video conferencing facilities available at Brecon, Llandrindod Wells and Newtown, which are well placed to serve the whole county. By covering the three regions in this manner it still enables the networking element of these events to be developed.”

One to one access to speakers will be available by providing delegates with a laptop and headset at each event. Delegates will be able to ask questions in either open forum or privately using the headset facilities.

MWMG is planning a diverse range of non accredited programmes focusing on all business sectors and speakers will be located at one venue with audiences at all three college sites.

The events are free to all businesses, including farms, in Powys. The first two will cover statutory regulation on engineering plant and equipment on June 22 and intellectual property on July 6.

“The aim is to encourage businesses to accept this method of delivery to make Powys a cost-effective region to deliver training programmes,” added Mrs Stephens.

To book a place at the events contact MWMG on Tel: 01686 628778. MWMG has members across Powys, Ceredigion, Meirionnydd and the Shropshire border.
