Point takes Robins off bottom

26/01/2011 @ 11:31

Newtown are off the bottom of the Welsh Premier League thanks to a gutsy 0-0 draw with high flying Llanelli at Latham Park tonight.
The Robins survived a bright opening spell from the visitors in which Craig Williams went close to opening the scoring in a one-on-one with keeper Dave Roberts.
But the best move of the half came from the hosts and ended with Craig Whitfield seeing his close range shot well saved by keeper Ashley Morris.
A more adventurous Newtown tested the Reds' defence after the break and Whitfield appeared to be fouled in the box en route to goal, recovering from a stumble to fire wide of the target.
Jamie Breese also fired wide from the edge of the box, but Robins' keeper Roberts tipped a Llanelli free-kick onto his crossbar and Chris Venables appeared to be frozen to the spot when presented with a late, but undeserved chance to win it for the visitors.
The draw lifted Newtown off the bottom of the table on goal difference from Haverfordwest County and they still have a game in hand over Haverfordwest and Bala.
