Weekend of shocks ahead?

07/01/2011 @ 12:27

Just when you thought it was safe to go back onto the football pitch, Mother Nature has struck again.

Snow has fallen across Mid Wales making this weekend’s big return to football action very unlikely.

And what a weekend it was shaping up to be! Central Wales Cup action was taking centre stage with the Emrys Morgan Cup keeping amateur league sides busy.

Technogroup Welshpool’s decision to pull out of the competition to concentrate their resources on League survival certainly warmed up the week too with fans, players and officials letting their anger known through local blog sites.

Even their opposition, Tregaron Turfs, were shocked to read on sister site mywelshpool that the game was off with one club insider contacting us to say: “It is scandalous. This would have been one of the biggest games in our history. We were expecting a big crowd of up to 300 and had secured good sponsors for the game. We have lost crucial revenue now as a result.”

Meanwhile, Spar Division Two side Abermule are back in action for the first time since December 11 having only managed one training session as a team in that time.

Not ideal preparations for the trip to Huws Gray Alliance side Penrhyncoch but the squad is back to full strength with Shaun Jones returning from injury.

Manager Steve Morris said: “Having not played for a month so it’s going to be tough against quality opposition but we will go there and give it our best shot, and hopefully pull off a shock result.”

Frustrated Caersws will be hoping to finally re-start their season when they host Machynlleth. The Bluebirds were unable to play at Rhydymwyn on Monday in what was the only New Year’s Day fixture cancelled due to weather. It has given some of their flu victims, including striker Graham Evans, the chance to recover.

Bettws carry the hopes of the Amateur League in the third round when they travel to Llanidloes Town while Carno host New Quay and Kerry travel to Bow Street.

Elsewhere, Berriew will want to bounce back from Sunday’s Montgomeryshire Cup final defeat at home to Aberystwyth University while their conquerors Montgomery host Tywyn Bryncrug.
