Newtown's season set to be extended

Newtown's Welsh Premier League season looks set to be extended after the weather wiped out the weekend's programme.

League officials will discuss an extension to the season when the management panel meets on Tuesday.

This weekend's wipeout means a further six fixtures have been added to the growing list of games which must be re-arranged and played before the mid-season split, which is currently scheduled for January 15.

Newtown have lost two out of their last three fixtures to the snow and frost and the double-header against the New Saints on Boxing Day New Year's Day both look doutful with no let-up in the arctic conditions.

With the Loosemores League Cup final scheduled for the following Saturday, neither Llanelli or The New Saints will be available for a Welsh Premier fixture, and the following Saturday is Welsh Cup fourth round day, involving nine of the top flight clubs.

It now seems likely that the date of the split will be pushed back with the worst-affected clubs Llanelli and Prestatyn facing a 10 and eight-game schedule respectively.

"Extending the season is certainly something we will have to look at," FAW head of competitions, Andrew Howard told S4C Sgorio.

"We are looking at another lost weekend of football so we'll certainly be looking at the situation at Tuesday's board meeting."
Prospects are already bleak for Tuesday's meeting between Haverfordwest and Carmarthen at the New Bridge Meadow, while Aberystwyth are hoping for a thaw ahead of their re-arranged home game with Airbus UK Broughton.
