Cale backs big goalkeeping decision

Newtown manager Andy Cale has backed his decision to bring assistant manager Lee Williams out of retirement as replacement for goalkeeper Dave Roberts.

The 42 year old stopper answered Cale's call at Carmarrthen on Saturday with a confident display, which included a brilliant injury time free kick save to ensure a point for the Robins.

"Lee was superb," said Cale. "Yes, you might say it was a bit of a gamble but Lee has the experience and the determination and I knew he would not let us down. I needed someone organising on the field and there is no-one better than Lee at that.

"I left the final decision up to him and he came through for the club and the cause. He organised the defence, was vocal and confident and he rounded off the display with a brilliant save or we could have lost a game that qwe deserved to win. His confidence was invaluable to the rest of the team.

Roberts, who joined Newtown after losing his position as Number One at Aberystwyth, has produced indifferent form recently and has been beaten twice in successive games from close to the halfway line.

Williams, who is also specialist penalty taker has made 138 Welsh Premier League appearances and netted seven times. His long career has taken him to Colwyn Bay, Birmingham City, Rhyl, Afan Lido, Goytre United, Bangor City, Kidderminster Harriers, TNS, Holywell Town and Connah's Quay Nomads.

He has managed both Bangor and Rhyl and signed again for TNS, where he won a Welsh Premier championship medal in 2000, in season 2004/5 as cover for Gerard Doherty.

He followed Andy Cale to Newtown as assistant manager in the summer of 2010.
