Life begins at 40 for Abermule

Four is a number you will be hearing a lot of at the moment if you follow a football club which is four miles from Newtown.
Abermule, which celebrated 40 years of football this year, has turned into a four-midable team since joining the Spar Mid Wales League for the first time this season and their tally to date stands at four wins, four draws and four defeats.
Exciting stuff for the statisticians and a solid haul of points for a team that is enjoying its step up from the amateur leagues for the first time.
“The club is really enjoying the experience and we feel that we have a young squad and all the boys are up for the challenge,” said club treasurer Bryan Jarman (right). “We have been consistently inconsistent this season, but we are mid-table at the moment so hopefully we can start turning draws into wins to challenge further up the table.”
Abermule was one of a number of amateur league clubs that took the controversial decision in the summer to step up to Mid Wales football to fill a slot in the newly former Spar Division Two. It has meant long away days but the improvement in standard has proved popular across the board with most in the game declaring the new league as a success.
“We knew it would be a competitive season and so far it has proved to be and we are enjoying it,” said Jarman. “The club turned 40 last season so it was time we started to progress. Off the pitch, we are waiting to hear from the league about our grant allocation. We are hoping to have permanent railings around the pitch and two new dug-outs. We have also applied for hard standing but that may have to wait for now.”

This Friday, the club is holding a bingo night fundraiser in the Abermule Hotel at 8pm.
