Chairmen to vote on fixture issues

19/11/2010 @ 12:06

Newtown FC chairman Mike Jones will meet with other Welsh Premier League chairmen on Sunday to discuss proposals to play league matches on Friday or Sundays.
"I shall be attending a WPL meeting in Oswestry to discuss the soccer-free Saturdays favoured by John Deakin of the FAW," he said.
"Hopefully, it will be a free vote and each club can vote for what day suits them as all our circumstances are different.
"I hope some sort of mileage restriction can be imposed as North to South fixtures could involve a 400 mile round trip for some."
Newtown officials fear that revenue could be affected by taking the games away from a Saturday.
Clubs have also been invited to discuss the future of the Loosemores Cup which has consistently failed to excite either clubs or  supporters. It is often used to give squad players a game and most recently unbeaten Bangor City made ten changes and lost 9 - 0 to The New Saints.
John Deakin has proposed that it is either dropped or opened up to the feeder leagues.
"This would certainly create more interest than WPL clubs playing themselves up to seven times per season and could re-ignite local rivalries and a genuine cup atmosphere, " said the chairman.
"I think if the competition is to be treated with the respect it deserves then the sponsors and FAW have to increase the prize money in the earlier rounds. At the moment, only the finalists get anything thus perpetuating the 'the rich get richer and the poor get poorer' syndrome."
