Newtown failed to take full advantage of home advantage and crashed out of the Welsh Cup to Bridgend.
After the heroics against Aberystwyth last week MNewtown looked out of sorts and a late Robbie Waters strike sent Bridgend into the last 16 of the Welsh Cup as Newtown’s disappointing run in the competition continued.
Despite playing a league below their Welsh Premier hosts, Bridgend made the early running and deservedly took an interval lead through Richard Ryan’s 27th-minute opener.
In fact, Newtown were on the back foot to such an extent that they hardly had an effort apart from Jamie Breese’s strike that was saved by keeper Neil Thomas. But the Robins looked a different proposition in the second half as they battled to avoid a third-round shock.
They were back on terms eight minutes after the interval when Marc Lloyd Williams crashed home his first goal of the season for the Robins from a tight angle following Breese’s cross.
