COBRA are through to the third round of the SWALEC Bowl but Newtown bowed out of the competition at home to Rhyl.
COBRA enjoyed an 11-try romp at Menai Bridge, who play in a league below the Meifod club and were never in contention.
Captain Aled Davies started the rout and despite Menai replying with a penalty, five more tries followed No 8 Dorian Llord, prop Nico Williams, centre Iwan Vaughan, flanker Gareth Evans and outside half Llew Williams for a 40-3 half time lead.
Alter 20 scoreless minutes at the beginning of the second half Menai Bridge scored a well worked converted try to close the gap. But it reawakened COBRA who went on to score five more tries with Lloyd adding three more to his own tally. Second row Lloyd Bright and a second for Davies completed the drubbing. Llew Williams kept up his excellent kicking form by adding ten conversions.
Newtown, meanwhile, bowed out after suffering a disappointing 48-14 defeat at home to Rhyl.
But there was better news for the town’s second string who got their Mid Wales league campaign up and running with a gutsy 12-6 win over Rhayader.
The
Green Army was dealt an early boost after the Rhayader flanker was sent off for a punch, handing a man advantage to Newtown for most of the game.
But Rhayader fought doggedly and made a match of it. A pair of Danny Hill penalties slotted Newtown ahead before a third Hill penalty just before the break sent them into half time 9-0 up.
Rhayader reduced the gap early on with a pently of their own before the boot of Hill restored the nine-point advantage with another penalty. As the game neared its close, Rhayader once again reduced the gap to a single score, but Town held firm for the remaining minutes to see out the game 12-6.
