Injury time Robins agony

09/11/2011 @ 11:48

Newtown again pulled off a performance the town should be proud of, but finished last night’s Corbett Sports Welsh Premier match pointless after injury time heart break.

The Robins have improved of late and showed plenty of confidence ealy on with Nick Rushton and Luke Boundford forcing saves from ex-Newtown keeper, Dave Roberts.

And on the stroke of halftime, Roberts was called upon again to pull off a great penalty save to put the sides into the interval goalless.

Nick Thomas in the Newtown goal was the busier keeper in the second half but Newtown still enjoyed plenty of possession in the Prestatyn half.

Rushton was denied again by Roberts but eventually beat the stopper on 63 minutes with a 25 yard beaty. That lead was retained for just 13 minutes before, sub Darren Hughes, struck the equaliser, heading into the goal from a corner.

As the game headed to a deserved point apiece, the referee awarded a penalty for Max Penk’s challenge on Prestatyn skipper, Neil Gibson, which was converted as Robins players still complained about the decision.

It was rough justice on Newtown who face a tough match with Llanelli at the weekend.
