Cricket in Montgomeryshire has been boosted by the graduation of a number of coaches through the ECB Level 1 Coaching Assistant Course held in Llandrindod Wells.

Members from Newtown, Montgomery and Welshpool cricket clubs came through the challenging course and are now in a position to develop and nurture the young cricketers of the area through their own clubs.

Jonathon Davies took part from Newtown Cricket Club and said the course underlined his club’s commitment to developing the future of the game locally.

“NCC is committed to youth development,” he said. “We now have 4 Level 2 coaches and a number of Level 1 coaches, all of whom give up their own time to work with the youngsters at the Club. In recent seasons we have seen a number of the youth team representing the 1st & 2nd XI. The Club will continue to help develop the youngsters by supporting its members through the coaching system.”

Dave Jones from From Welshpool Cricket Club explained the importance of the certification: “We gained funding through Sportlot Community Chest during the summer to support our drive to developing coaching at the club and hence the stars of the future. There are a lot of youngsters out there wanting to play cricket and for many in the locality, Welshpool is the ideal place,” he said.

“We will work closely with the community, including local sports clubs and schools, during the close season to attract more youngsters to the club for a brighter future. Subject to funding it is hoped that the club will develop some coaches to level 2 in the short term.”
