Magnificent seven for Bluebirds

23/10/2011 @ 11:11

Caersws made it lucky number seven wins on the bounce as their irresistible run of form continued at Rhos Aelwyd this weekend.

The Bluebirds were amongst the relegation strugglers a month ago, but have turned their fortunes around to secure mid-table comfort. Mark Griffiths bagged a double and Rob Evans another as they eased past struggling Rhos 3-0.

And there was great news for the most entertaining team of the Huws Gray Alliance Llanrhaeadr – who scored an 83rd minute winner through Tom Evans to beat Flint Town United 4-3.

Evans and a brace from Alan Jones had put The Waterfallmen 3-0 up at half time but Flint reduced the arrears to 3-2 before Evans struck a fourth seven minutes from time. Flint netted a late third but Llan held on for a memorable win.

Will Thomas scored a brace at Llandudno for Guilsfield but his side went down 3-2. Thomas’ goals brought the Guils level after Llandudno took an early 2-0 lead, but the winner came shortly after half time to allow the hosts to go above their visitors in the league.

In the league above - the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier - Newtown slumped to a lacklustre 2-1 defeat at home to Aberystwyth with both sides having a man sent off. Max Penk had equalised in the first half for the Robins but the winner came midway through the second period for Jordan Fellows.

In the Spar Division One, Montgomery remain on top after seeing off Carno 3-0 but Rhayader are breathing down their necks after chalking up a 5-0 win over Dyffryn Banw.

But Waterloo Rovers are keeping up with the pace after beating Aberystwyth University 3-0 to stay third. Neighbours Welshpool Town went 1-0 up for the fourth weekend on the trot but went down 4-1 after a disastrous 15 minutes in the second half at Builth Wells. Graeme McGill bagged a superb first for the club but the wheels came off in all too familiar fashion after the break.

Berriew’s topsy-turvy season continued with a 2-1 defeat at Dolgellau while Llansantffraid Village went down 2-1 at Bow Street.

In Division Two, Four Crosses won 3-0 to make it three wins and three clean sheets from three October games for Four Crosses who closed in on Knighton at the top after they lost 1-0 at Llandrindod Wells.

Llanfair United lost their 100% record, going down 1-0 at Aberaeron while Llanfyllin recorded a welcome 3-0 win over Rhosgoch. Kerry were held 2-2 at home by Aberdyfi and Abermule lost 3-0 against Machynlleth.

In the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire League Honda Division One, Guilsfield Reserves are the team to watch after trouncing Berriew Reserves 8-0. There were hat-tricks for Sam Griffiths and Luke Weaver as well as goals for player-manager Oli Morgan and Luke Francis.

A single strike from Sam Williams gave leaders Caersws Reserves a 1-0 win over Waterloo Rovers, while Bettws beat Llanrhaeadr Reserves 4-3 despite a hat-trick from the visitors’ Ed Leyland. Mark Thomas (2), Jamie Huxley and James Vaughan ensured the Bettws win.

Llangedwyn’s 100% record went at Llanfechain after Andrew Edwards’ goal was cancelled out by Gary Ellis for Llanfechain.

Llansantffraid Reserves beat Churchstoke 3-1 with goals from Bryn Jones, Henry Davies and James Martin.

In Mitsubishi Division Two, the big Newtown derby went the way of the Reserves who beat cross town rivals Wanderers 3-1 with goals from Lyndon Gwilt, Jacob Sharman and Mark Salvati. Jamie Smart netted from the spot for Wanderers. Elsewhere, Player-manager Adam Knight bagged two and Dave Walton and Andrew Gwilt added one each as Llandrinio beat Abermule Reserves 4-2.
