Cobra book quarter final berth

Local sides endured mixed fortunes in the North Wales Cup at the weekend with Cobra easing through but a spirited Welshpool side fell at home to Machynlleth.

Cobra faced Mold for a quarter-final berth against Bala and despite a tight first half, with Llew Williams’ two penalties giving them a slender 6-5 lead, they went on to win 19-12.

It was Cobra in control after the break, with Williams adding a further penalty before Frazer Roberts touched down for their first try and Williams added the extras. Williams converted another penalty for the 19-5 lead before an injury time try gave Mold some respectability to the score.

Welshpool performed well against Machynlleth but eventually went out of the Cup 51-29 to their visitors.

Ryan Griffiths and formidable second-rower Jamie Evans both scored to give Welshpool an early 12-3 advantage but the visitors responded with a try of their own before more tries were traded, Welshpool’s coming from scrum-half Jonathan Rees-Jones. A Mach penalty separated the sides 20-17 at the break.

But Machynlleth took control in the second half, crossing for five tries, despite winger Tom Carter touching down for two for Welshpool, one of which was converted by Daley Jones.
