Rugby: Clubs battle to beat the freeze

21/01/2023 @ 11:31

It's a mixed bag of cup and league games this weekend for the clubs of Mid Wales, writes Gary Williams.

COBRA, buoyed by their recent win against Bethesda, make the trip to Dolgellau in North Wales Division One.

Although six points ahead of the hosts in the league table, COBRA know that this game will be played with the intensity of a cup final and will need to be at their best to take the spoils.

It’s likely that the winning margin, for either side, in this game will be just a couple of points.

Welshpool are unfortunately without a game as their scheduled fixture, away at Mold, has been postponed due to Mold playing in the WRU national cup competition. All eyes for the Maesydre men are now on next Saturday's fixture (January 28) at home to deadly rivals Newtown.

Newtown themselves do have a league game this weekend, hosting Shotton Steel. With just three games played so far this season, the Steelmen will hopefully fulfil this fixture and, if so, it's a perfect chance for Newtown to get some much-needed points and a confidence boost before next week's derby day.

In Division Three North East, the Wrexham 2nds v COBRA 2nds game has been postponed and, due to the odd number of teams in this division, Machynlleth are the club without a game.

Llanidloes are flying the flag for Mid Wales clubs in the WRU Cup competitions with a home fixture against South Wales side Old Tyleryans - this game kicks off at 2pm. The visitors currently lie just off the bottom of Division 6 East but Llanidloes will take nothing for granted as they look to progress to the next round.

On Sunday, COBRA's Ladies team host Nelson Ladies in Meifod.
