Cobra claimed their fifth win of the season and maintained their 100% record in Division Two (north) by overcoming their struggling Montgomeryshire rivals Newtown, 31-5.
Played in unseasonably warm temperatures, Cobra opened the scoring early through a Llew Williams penalty which was followed by two more kicks for a strong advantage.
The first try soon came when a well-worked driving lineout resulted in prop Bryn Edwards touching down and Williams again split the sticks from a tight angle.
Williams added another penalty and with half time approaching, scrum half Alwyn Williams found a hole and evaded tackles to dive over the line for a 24-0 lead. Cobra freshened their pack at the break but Newtown started brightly, retaining the ball well and being rewarded with a try after some good running by their forwards.
The second half became a scrappy affair, but captain Aled Davies pushed over for a try and with minutes remaining, Cobra went in search of the bonus point try but Newtown held firm.
Welshpool were left without a match after their opposition withdrew from their Division Three (north) fixture.
