Berriew solve keeper quandary

30/09/2011 @ 06:26

Berriew have solved their goalkeeping dilemma which has seen an outfield player fill in between the sticks for the last two games.

And while online ‘chatter’ has linked the likes of former Guilsfield manager Mike Barton and Welshpool Town stopper Garry Foster to the jersey vacated by Dave Jones’ departure to Llanidloes, a forgotten man of football has come back from the wilderness to make his debut tonight against Rhayader.

Chris Williams, a former Barnet apprentice who was last involved locally as an assistant to Barton at Guilsfield, has been given the all-clear to return after injury.

“After a long few years it’s great to be able to get back out on the pitch,” said Williams. “I’m looking forward to getting rid of the rust and I’m raring to go!”

Berriew’s match with Rhayader kicks off at 7.30pm and is one of a handful of Spar Mid Wales League Division One games this weekend with the Welsh Cup taking centre stage. Welshpool Town are on league duty too at Bow Street while improving Waterloo Rovers entertain Dolgellau.

In Division Two, Llanfair’s 100 per cent record will be tested at home to Machynlleth while Four Crosses take on Talgarth. Meifod entertain Aberdyfi and Abermule host Tregaron.

Guilsfield have signed full backs Nathan Leonard from Ellesmere and Josh Evans from Cefn Druids ahead of their tricky Welsh Cup tie at Rhos Aelwyd.

Caersws have lost attacking midfielder Richie Evans to Penrhyncoch as they prepare to launch a cup run against Conwy United. Montgomery will be confident of advancing against Welsh Alliance opposition Connah’s Quay Town while Carno entertain Coedpoeth.

Meanwhile, Newtown will look to stop their run of heavy defeats when Afan Lido visit Latham Park for a big Corbett Sports Welsh Premier encounter.

The Robins have injury concerns ahead of the match and know another defeat will put more pressure on boss Bernie McNally who this week received the backing of the Newtown board.

Elsewhere, a number of amateur league clubs will be involved in Emrys Morgan Cup action.

Meanwhile, Waterloo Rovers Youth beat Saltney Town 4-3 after extra time to advance in the Welsh Youth Cup. Nathan James opened the scoring but Rovers found themselves 2-1 down before Shaun Roberts eqaulised with a fine solo effort. Jonny Jones’ penalty put them ahead but Saltney equalised four minutes from time. James popped up with the winner in the 1st half of extra time.
