Robins board backs McNally

Newtown’s board is firmly behind boss Bernie McNally, dispelling any talk of change following their third heavy defeat in a row on Friday night.

In a statement to fans following Friday night’s 4-0 loss at Bangor City, Chairman Elwyn Preece said the manager needed time and were confident the former North Ireland international would pull them clear of relegation from the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier.

“We have not given the Manager sufficient tools to do the job,” said Preece. “The League is highly competitive with many Clubs strengthening at a time when we had to spend less money.

“We are fully behind the Manager and his assistant and will be backing them to build the side which is currently a work in progress. We are still confident of Premiership survival which is our principle aim this season, and hope to target a good run in the Welsh cup this year.”

Referring to Friday night’s loss, which followed heavy defeats to Llanelli and Neath, Preece said: “It was a case of Youth against Seniors and the experience, height and power of Bangor were self evident. We created some good chances and had Robbie Millington blasted a couple of chances when he had rounded the keeper instead of sliding the ball, allowing it to be cleared off the line, we could have had a couple of goals.

“Next game against Afon Lido is clearly crucial as they collected three valuable points against Carmarthen this weekend and, after a run of six defeats, we badly need points to keep pace with our rivals.”

McNally joined Newtown mid-summer after Darren Ryan, appointed at the end of last season, decided to quit.
