Town set for football derby

23/09/2011 @ 03:45

As Newtown’s senior side prepares for a Friday night encounter at Bangor City tonight, this weekend will see the town host its first Saturday football derby for a few years.

Newtown will look to spring a surprise at Bangor having slumped to the foot of the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier, but closer to home, the town is preparing itself for a welcome local derby.

Newtown Reserves will face Newtown Rangers in the Tanners Town Cup after both sides reformed this season in the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire Amateur League. It promises to be a full blooded affair with bragging rights up for grabs.

Elsewhere, in the Huws Gray Alliance, Caersws have found some form and eased themselves away from the bottom three with back to back wins and will look to continue their form at Llandudno. Llanrhaeadr meanwhile host Buckley Town.

Russell Cadwallader has shrugged off the pressure his Guilsfield side is currently under by insisting “We are determined to get the club out of this current situation”.

Cadwallader hopes to sign Nathan Leonard from Ellesmere next week and is on the trail of Josh Evans to bolster his side which finds itself in an early-season mire along with this weekend’s opposition Penycae.

In the Spar Mid Wales League, Montgomery have found themselves five points clear thanks to their unblemished record after six matches.

Clive McNamee’s side have lost only two from 43 matches, a run of form which the manager has called “incredible”. This weekend they go to Tywyn Bryncrug.

Resurgent Welshpool Town host neighbours Berriew buoyed by their first victory of the season in midweek. Berriew, meanwhile, have been suffering from indifferent form and have yet to repeat the highs of last season’s championship chasing campaign.

Elsewhere, Waterloo Rovers, buzzing from their midweek win at Llanidloes, head to Newbridge while Llansanttfraid Village travel to Llanidloes.

Dyffryn Banw go to Bow Street and Carno make the short trip to Dolgellau.

In Division Two, Four Crosses will look to continue their promising start to the season at home to Aberaeron while Llanfair United face a big match at Llandrindod Wells.

Kerry entertain Bont and Abermule travel to struggling Llanfyllin. Meifod will look for some well needed points at home to Rhosgoch.

The Amateur League clubs are involved in Village or Town Cup action.
