COBRA magic and Newtown bounce back

22/09/2011 @ 03:46

Buoyant Cobra chalked up their second away win of the season, securing a bonus point in the process, following a tough match at Wrexham in Division Two (north).

Llew Williams exchanged opening penalties following a tense start before Cobra took the lead through a try from outside centre Frazer Roberts which Williams converted.

Cobra upped the tempo and a second try was not long in coming. A slick passing move from the backline released winger Richard Jones in the corner. Williams again converted.

But the hosts fought their way back with a try from a line-out and it was game on at the half.
Experienced prop Aled Roberts came on and started then finished a length-of-the-pitch move for their third try. He was later sin-binned through followed closely by two Wrexham players.

But a converted Wrexham try meant nerves were jangling and when flanker Chris Morris was dismissed for infringement at the ruck, the hosts took advantage with another try. And as time was running down, Cobra decided to run a last-minute penalty and Williams crossed to ensure the bonus point victory.

Meanwhile, Newtown returned from Machynlleth with a hard-earned 17-13 victory to bounce back superbly from the previous week’s defeat.

But it was second dire weekend for Welshpool in a row in Division Three (North) after crashing to 58-15 defeat at Llangollen who remain unbeaten.

Winger Josh Wilson crossed three times for the hosts for the second game running as the hosts signalled their intent as early as the third minute with an opening try.

Welshpool did manage to secure some possession and had several penalty attempts go wide of the uprights. In contrast, clinical Llangollen were able to seize upon any mistakes by Welshpool and they raced into a 22-3 lead. Back came Welshpool, though, and a converted try from Daley Jones reduced the gap to 22-10 at the interval.

That’s as close as the visitors got, though, as Llangollen used the slope to their advantage in the second half to run in 36 more points. Jake Best scored a consolation for Pool.
