Newtown put on a splendid performance on a weekend the club celebrated 175 years by putting MSG Shropshire Division One leaders Chirk to the sword.
It has been a frustrating second half to the season for Newtown, but they put all that behind them as Matt Knight (32), John Anthony (68), Luan Franken (54), Ricky Davies (42), Tom Anderson (30) and Ally Laird (30no) all contributed as Newtown set a fine target of 287-7.
The bowlers then played their part with Joe Monk (4-12) leading the way to dismiss the visitors for just 78.
Montgomery are set for life in Division Three after their latest defeat saw them 28 points adrift at the bottom of the league with three games to go.
The latest loss at Wroxeter & Uppington came after they were dismissed for 185, with Sam Williams (63) top scoring. The hosts eased home then for the loss of four wickets in 37 overs.
Welshpool’s bid for a top two finish in Division Three was hit by a 16-run defeat at home to Oswestry II.
Joe Cadwallader (4-41) led the Welshpool bowling charge as the visitors were restricted to 165 all out, but it proved to be enough as only Paul Chapman (41) was able to mount a serious innings as Welshpool stumbled to 149 all out.
Guilsfield & Llandrinio are not out of the Division Four relegation mire yet following a heavy home defeat at the LHG Oval against Wheaton Aston.
The visitors posted 196-9 despite season’s best figures of 4-47 from Dave Jones, and it was more than enough as again the hosts struggled for runs and were all out for 92.
Newtown II’s and Llanidloes’ Division Five seasons appear to fizzling out after both suffered defeats to leave them standing together in mid table.
Newtown II suffered a 39-run defeat at Much Wenlock despite a brilliant 105 from opener Griff Davies, while Llanidloeswere dismissed for just 50 runs at home to Iscoyd & Fenns Bank.
But to finish on a bright note, Welshpool II kept their title hopes alive with an 81-run win over Forton.
Dave Whitehouse (93) and Chris Proctor (50) powered Welshpool through to 247-4, more than ample with Forton reduced to 166 all out.
