Cockram makes Welshpool switch

Welshpool Town manager David Jones has hailed the capture of striker Mike Cockram (right) from Montgomery as a huge boost ahead of his side’s clash with fellow Spar Division One strugglers Dolgellau tonight.

It has been a tough ride for the rookie boss since saving the club from extinction last month, but having suffered heavy defeats against the league’s top three sides, he has seen signs of light to give him optimism in two further narrow defeats and the draw against Llansantffraid Village.

“It’s been a tough start as expected but things are coming together and I am still hopeful we will have a good season,” said Jones. “We always knew it was going to be a struggle early on but despite not winning yet I have enjoyed the challenge.

“Cockram signing is a massive boost for the club and the fact he has left the top of the league for us shows there is genuine interest in the club and I'm hopeful that 2-3 more well known local players will join us the coming weeks.”

Cockram himself said it was a tough decision to leave Montgomery but praised manager Clive McNamee for allowing his transfer to go through.

“Mac was great. He knew I wanted more game time and to help out my home town club and pushed through the transfer. I am looking forward to playing for Town now and seeing if we can turn things around.”

Also tonight, Waterloo Rovers boss Dale Roberts is looking for a response from his side at high flying Llanidloes after admitting saying a few choice words in the dressing room on Saturday to his misfiring players.

Montgomery renew their local rivalry with Berriew who were buoyed by a 5-0 cup win on Saturday. Under-performing Llansantffraid Village host Carno.

In Division Two, Abermule travel to Llandrindod Wells while Kerry make the long trip to Presteigne.
