Cobra Rugby Club recorded their second victory on the trot on a day which would be sooner forgotten for Welshpool and Newtown.
The Meifod-based side overcame a tough Abergele side 24-13 for three Division Two (north) points to show that they are serious promotion contenders this season. At the same time both Newtown and Welshpool suffered heavy defeats.
In a wind-affected game, Cobra opened the scoring early with a Llew Williams penalty before Abergele slotted home one of their own to level.
Cobra used the wind well and Rhodri Davies finished off a well worked move to score a try in the corner converted by Williams. Veteran inside centre Andrew Pryce added another great try under the posts with Williams adding the extras to place Cobra in the driving seat at 17-3.
But Cobra were reduced to 14 when scrum half Alwyn Williams was sin binned allowing Abergele some breathing space and they took advantage with an unconverted try.
Facing the wind, Cobra dug deep in the second half and Gele closed the gap with a second uncoverted try.
Alwyn Williams made up for his enforced 10-minute rest with a tremendous second half showing that produced a try, duly converted by Llew Williams to maintain his 100 per cent day and a great result for the hosts.
Newtown, however, succumb to Dolgellau at home, finishing on the wrong end of a 46-16 result.
In Division Three (north), Welshpool were brought back down to earth with a bang after losing 76-8 at home to Rhos, despite starting the season last week with a win.
It was a tough day for Welshpool’s youth side too but they performed well in the 19-17 defeat to Nant Conwy.
Danny Williams cancelled out Nant’s early try but when key player Ryan Goodwin was yellow carded, Nant took advantage with two tries. In the second half, Goodwin made amends with two tries for Welshpool, but with just one converted by Harry Roberts, Welshpool fell just short.
