Cruel decisions undo Robins

04/09/2011 @ 11:35

Newtown’s promising performance came to nothing when two controversial calls by the officials saw them come unstuck at Port Talbot in the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier.

The Robins looked lively, and deserved their lead on the half hour when Kevin Davies latched on to Nick Rushton’s centre.

But Port were level on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot despite protests that the foul occurred outside of the box.

As the game went on, Newtown’s dominance eased and substitute Martin Rose put Port ahead 14 minutes from time. The third came from Rose in the 87th minute despite Robins defenders claiming the ball had crossed the line earlier in the move for a gal kick.

Speaking to the Club's website, Bernie McNally said: "I am feeling frustrated with the decisions as they affect a younger team more badly than an experienced one, but we have an important game in mid-week with Prestatyn visiting on Wednesday night and we have to lick our wounds and fight back to get something out of that game, with a win badly needed.”

Meanwhile, Alun ‘Shearer’ Jones was the toast of Llanrhaeadr last night after his hat-trick enabled the league’s newcomers to continue their Huws Gray Alliance adventure with a 5-2 win at Ruthin Town.

Jones was joined on the scoresheet by the in-form Jamie Evans and Ben White for a morale boosting victory that has announced their arrival on the big stage following two previous draws.

Guilsfield and Caersws meanwhile continue to struggle to get a foothold.

Guilsfield went down 2-1 at home to Conwy United while Caersws suffered the same fate at Flint Town United.

In the Welsh Cup, there were defeats on the road for Berriew, Llansantffraid Village and Llanfair United but Carno, Llanidloes Town and Montgomery Town advanced to the first round proper with victories.

Rhayader turned on the style in the second half of their match with Welshpool Town in the Spar Division One. Going into the break 3-2 up, Rhayader stepped up a gear with six more goals to run out 9-2 victors.

In Division Two, Four Crosses looked strong in their 6-1 mauling of Knighton while Kerry chalked up another win, beating Machynlleth 4-2. Llanfyllin and Meifod are finding the going tough after big home defeats.

In the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire Amateur League, Caersws Reserves are taking control of Honda Division One after their 2-0 win over Guilsfield Reserves. Tom Lapworth netted both.

Champions Llanidloes Reserves found form at Llanfechain with a 5-2 win while goals from Boris Martinez and Ed Lavent secured a 2-1 win for Llanrhaeadr Reserves over Waterloo Reserves.

In Mitsubishi Division Two, Lee Stephens, James Jandrell and Leon Williams scored as Abermule Reserves beat Waterloo Colts 3-1.

Newtown Reserves and Four Crosses Reserves shared six goals while Newtown Wanderers also scored three, but went down 6-3 at home to Trefonen.
