Scrum down for the new season

Newtown, Welshpool and COBRA kick off their new seasons this weekend with the promise of exciting things to come from Montgomeryshire’s clubs.

Newtown will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a promotion charge with many fancying the side to do well this season in Division Two (north).

A pre-season win at Llandrindod Wells blew off the cobwebs and the side has trained hard ahead of a tricky opener at Colwyn Bay tomorrow.

Derek Murray continues as head coach with Neil Farrington stepping up to assist.

COBRA have set their sights on promotion this season from Division Two (north) following an impressive year which has seen the emergence of talent from the youth ranks.

They start their campaign at much-fancied Machynlleth and as an added boost, the club will bring in former Wales, Llanelli and Scarlets prop John Davies next week to take a training session. James Watkins continues as head coach.

Welshpool launch their new era following 12 months of turmoil with a fresh impetus under new head coach John Williams who has joined from Ystalyfera and has set to work on improving player fitness.

They launch their Division Three (north) campaign at familiar foes, with an opening fixture against fellow relegated side Bangor who they beat last season.

Several players have kept active in the summer with a switch to rugby league and No 8 Jack Brady and fellow youth product Jake Best are expected to shine this season. Welshpool has withdrawn its 2nds side from the Mid Wales League this season to focus on the senior team.
