Hop Hop Hooray

Hundreds of football fans from across the UK will descend upon the local soccer scene this weekend when the ‘Groundhoppers’ visit local grounds.

Spar Mid Wales kick-off times have been staggered, starting tonight with a Division One blockbuster between Berriew and Llanidloes, and culminating on Monday evening when Waterloo Rovers take on Montgomery.

In between, the football enthusiasts will visit three Spar clubs on the coast on Saturday and three in the south of the county on Sunday, buying match tickets, programmes, raffle tickets and food at each venue to pump a collective figure in the thousands into local football.

And their return has been welcomed by league secretary Phil Woosnam.

“We have already sold more than 100 ‘season tickets’ for all of the matches and we can expect each match to average around 250-300 spectators,” he said.

The groundhoppers visited Mid Wales last year when the average gate surpassed 300 per game, ploughing welcome funds into local clubs who are rolling out the red carpet to welcome the fanatics back this weekend.

Meanwhile, as Newtown host their first home match of the season against Bala in the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier, there are some big matches in store for Montgomeryshire’s Huws Gray Alliance sides.

Llanrhaeadr will come to a standstill when they host their first ever match at that level against Porthmadog, buoyed by their first point of the season at Guilsfield in midweek.

Guilsfield are without striker Danny Barton and the injured Ian Probert for the trip to Flint Town United and Steve Jones has switched to Waterloo Rovers in midweek.

Caersws entertain Rhyl in good spirits after their first win of the season at Penrhyncoch in midweek with the addition of left footer Tyrone McFadden to the ranks.

Meanwhile, in the Spar Mid Wales League this weekend, Berriew take on Llanidloes to set the groundhop in motion tonight while the match of the weekend brings it to a close on Monday night when high-flying Montgomery go to Waterloo Rovers. Welshpool Town look to bounce back from a heavy midweek defeat to Monty at Llansantffraid Village on Monday morning.

The Spar Division Two fixtures are spread out over the weekend too with the pick of the bunch seeing Llanfair United go to Bont while surprise early season package Abermule go to Aberdyfi.

There is also a full weekend of Amateur League fixtures.
