Newtown RFC set for big season

01/08/2011 @ 01:03

Newtown Rugby Club is preparing for what they expect to be a tough 2011-12 season when Division Two North kicks off in September.

Pre-season training is well underway with friendlies lined up against Division 4 West side Cardigan and a second to be confirmed ahead of a league curtain raiser against relegated Colwyn Bay on September 3.

The first team has been bolstered by a couple of players from the youth set-up moving into senior rugby with coach, Derek Murray, welcoming the healthy competition for places.

The second team, the ‘Green Army’, kick off with a home fixture on September 10 against Rhayader, and will be looking to go one better than last season when they finished runners up in both the league and cup. Unfortunately the league is reduced to six teams this season as Welshpool 2nds have dropped out and Trefyclawdd will be playing in a newly formed WRU Div 7. Despite fewer competitive fixtures, strong friendly fixtures will be arranged to ensure that the seconds have a full season of games.

Off the field, Owen Davies takes the helm as Chairman and beings bags of enthusiasm and professionalism to the position.

A club statement added: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing Chairman Ernie Jones for all his efforts over the past two years.”

Newtown RFC can now be followed on Facebook, www.facebook.com/newtownrugby, where players, members and supporters can keep up to date with all that’s happening at the club, on and off the field.
