Newtown lose, Llanidloes win

05/05/2021 @ 02:08

Newtown suffered a losing start to their Division One campaign with a 71-run defeat at Worfield II.

Their decision to field first backfired, with the hosts going on to make 260-9 despite Joe Monk (5-68) and Tom Anderson (3-74) taking the lion’s share of wickets.

John Anthony (46) and Ricky Davies (46) got Newtown’s reply off to a solid start but wickets fell regularly once those two had departed to finish all out on 188.

Montgomery came within six runs of winning a dramatic game at Oswestry II in Division Two after being set a target of 215-8 to chase. David Jones (4-50) topped the bowling figures.

Charles Clinton (76) and Tim Davies (46) led an exciting run chase, but it fell just short, meaning Monty had to settle for a smaller share of the points.

Lance Parkes (pictured) marked his first appearance of the season with a superb unbeaten 84 as Welshpool cruised to a 100-run victory over Church Aston in Division Three.

Parkes partnered with Patrick Davies (45) to see Welshpool through to 195-6, before opening bowlers Mat McWhinnie (3-17) and Sam Cadwallader (3-22) ensured the reply ended well short on 95 in the 33rd over.

The evergreen Allan Williams continues to spearhead Guilsfield & Llandrinio’s Division Five campaign after taking 6-18 to ensure Alberbury II’s run chase ended well short.

Earlier, Sam Griffiths (54) and Martin Owen (42) got Guilsfield’s innings off to a great start before it eventually reached 199-9.

It then became the Williams show, with the veteran bowler producing two devastating spells to reduce the hosts to 117 all out in the 35th over to maintain the village side’s unbeaten start.

Newtown II picked up their first win in Division Five after catching visitors’ Knockin II’s total of 167. Brandon Baynham (5-27) and Jon Davies (3-32) did the damage. Tom Foulkes then smashed  an unbeaten 75 as Newtown cruised home in the 35th over with just three wickets down.

Adrian Foulkes took 5-27 as Llanidloes eased to a second win at home to Cound II in Division Six. The visitors made 152-8 after being put in to bat, but Rob Davies hit an unbeaten 81 as the hosts secured victory in the 37th over with four wickets remaining.

Montgomery II suffered a five-wicket defeat at home to Bomere Heath II who made short work of chasing their 131-8. Keith Griffiths (46) was the most notable Monty performer on the day.
