Captain’s Day at Lakeside Golf Club was hosted by Brad Willetts with a big field in pursuit of the McKay Captains Cup at the weekend.
But it was 11-handicapper Brent Jones who clinched the honours with a fine round, ahead of the ever-enthusiastic John Tapper (24) in second and former winner Clifford Cooke (20) in third.
Terry Broadhurst retained his title with a handsome gross 73 with Jones taking second spot with a 74. Charlie Brown was third on 79.
The straightest/longest drive was won by Mike Pierce with a super drive landing plumb on the line. Nearest the pin in two shots on the par 4 third was secured by guest Mark Ray from St. Idloes Golf Club. A separate competition was also held for guests of the Club Captain with Wayne Moore of Maesmawr Golf Club taking first, edging out Charlie Jones of Welsh Border Golf Club into runners-up.
A fantastic £471.91 was raised on the day for the Captain’s Charity in aid of Cancer Research. This will be added to the near £3,000 already raised so far this year.
The 9-hole Summer league also continued last week: Nett League 1st – Sue Westwood (32) – 26 points, 2nd Mike Pierce (20) – 23 points & 3rd Steve Pugh (22) – 21 points. Gross league 1st Joe Davies, 2nd Ian Clark & 3rd Mike Pierce 14 points.
