Disappointing day for Newtown

12/07/2011 @ 01:29

A new statistical book revealed last week that teams who win the toss and put the opposing side in to bat generally lose! The problem is that the book hasn’t reached Newtown library yet.

The town’s cricket team slipped to a home defeat at the hands of Reman Services in the Marston’s Premier League to remain in relegation trouble.

Electing to bowl first, Newtown restricted the visitors to 170-9 off their 50 overs following some tight bowling from Craig Davies (3-41) and captain Tony Springer (2-16). Chris Speake had steadied the ship for the visitors with an unbeaten 49 after coming in at No 7.

In reply, Newtown wickets fell regularly and only an unbeaten Tom Goodman 58 showed any resistance as they fell short on 133 all out in the 48th over.

The second string didn’t do much better at Reman Services II in the Reserve League. Batting first, Newtown were skittled out for 95 off 41 overs with only Sam Cooke (41 and pictured) able to break the shackles.

The hosts cruised to victory for the loss of just three wickets with plenty of overs in hands.
