Big local derby Cup curtain raiser

08/07/2011 @ 11:20

The Welsh Cup draw was made last night and it has drawn a big local derby which will provide a cracking curtain raiser to the 2011/12 season on August 13.

Spar Division One rivals Waterloo Rovers and Berriew will meet on the opening day in the first qualifying round, while Montgomery will take on Machynlleth, Llanfair United go to Tregaron, and Llanfyllin host Brickfield Rangers. Kerry travel to Connah’s Quay Town while Carno host Trearddur Bay and Rhayader Town take on Hawarden Rangers.

The opening up of the competition to the ‘exiles’ has enticed three clubs to return to the fold, with Newport County, Wrexham and Merthyr Town joining 187 other teams, who represent the Welsh Premier League at the top of the pyramid to ambitious teams at the very foot of the pyramid in Area Association football. The total of 190 entries from Aber Valley YMCA to Wrexham is an increase of 10% on last year’s figure, which is a further boost for the competition.

The twelve Welsh Premier League clubs, as well as Wrexham and Newport County, have received byes into Round 3, whilst Guilsfield and Caersws are among the 32 teams excused until the First Round.

Sixteen other teams have benefitted from a bye into Qualifying Round 2, which includes Llandantffraid Village and Llanidloes Town. Welshpool Town and Abermule are among the teams that have decided not to enter.
