All quiet on the Western front!

As local Spar Division One football teams returned to training this week, there is one thing that is obvious... the lack of transfer activity!

Waterloo Rovers, Berriew and Montgomery have all declared that it will be more of the same for the coming season while new Welshpool Town manager Adam Knight is also yet to reveal new faces for his campaign.

Even Llansantffraid Village, expected to be the big recruiters this summer, have not confirmed fresh blood despite links to Berriew’s Jon Gamble, Guilsfield’s Graeme McGill and Llanrhaeadr’s Simon Edwards.

Montgomery boss Clive McNamee said that his phone has been ringing as opposed to having to chase players but expects his Division Two winning squad to be pretty much unchanged.

“The lads were good enough to get us up here and while there have been a couple of players that have contacted me we’ll see how it pans out,” he said. Montgomery have friendlies lined up so far against Llanfair (Home 29th July), Guilsfield (Away 2nd August) and Berriew (Home 6th August for the Ernie McNamee Memorial Cup).

Berriew have lost three key players to Guilsfield – Will Thomas, Ian Probert and Ed Baldwyn - but manager Neil Pryce has kept a cool head to admit that maybe one or two new players could be included but he has confidence in the players that have remained.

Meanwhile, Waterloo Rovers new boss Dale Roberts has focussed on bringing more out of the players from last season’s injury-hit campaign but is still on the trail of two new signings.

“We started training last Thursday with all of the first team squad committed from last season,” he said: “I am still trying to bring in a couple of new faces wherever possible but just waiting on a few. I'm confident that what we've got will do a lot better than last season so no need to panic in bringing players in.”
