Just no stopping Newtown, Welshpool
Wickets were shared throughout the attack as Ally Laird’s decision to field first paid off, restricting the hosts to 147. John Anthony led the reply with a fine 68, adding to his two earlier wickets, as Newtown cruised home with eight overs still in the tank.
Montgomery’s Shrewsbury & West Division 2 trip to Ellesmere was cancelled due to the weather, but Welshpool continued their strong run in the Wales & West Group despite being restricted to 137 all out at Montgomery II.
Patrick Davies (34) and Joe Cadwallader (32) were required to bolster the Welshpool innings from mid-order as Harry Wilkinson (3-28) was the main Monty problem-maker. But Monty runs were hard to come by with tight bowling restricting the response to 101-7.
Newtown II gained revenge on Guilsfield following defeat the week before with a 100-run win. Sam Cooke (57no) and Matt Humphreys (56no) put together a formidable third-wicket partnership to build a Newtown target of 154-2. Opener Sam Griffiths (27) got the Guilsfield response off to a good start, but wickets tumbled as the visitors ended well short with Jonathon Davies claiming 5-12.
The Llanidloes match at Bishop’s Castle was cancelled.
Welshpool II maintained the club’s overall form with a comfortable eight-wicket win over Pontesbury II who were dismissed for just 81 in the Border League. Rob Anderson and Neil Pryce took three weeks apiece. The hosts cruised home in the 17th over.
