Newtown batsmen in form

12/08/2020 @ 11:13

Newtown’s batsmen again laid strong foundations to build another victory in the John Rees Division One.

After being put in to bat at Bomere Heath, Ryan Davies (52no) and Ricky Davies (35) led the way as the visitors clocked up a decent looking 205-7 from their 40 overs.

Ally Laird (4-25) and John Anthony (3-45) ensured the run chase fell short on 178.

Montgomery lost a nail biter at home to Oswestry II in the Shrewsbury & West Division Two after setting a target of 179 to chase. Father and son pairing of Gwynn Williams (45) and Sam Williams (35) scored the lion’s share. But it wasn’t quite enough as the visitors edged home at the death with eight wickets down.

Batsman Paul Chapman and strike bowler Rob Anderson teamed up to record a convincing victory for Welshpool over neighbours Guilsfield & Llandrinio in the Wales & West Division.

Chapman was in scintillating form on his way to 84 as Welshpool amassed 219-8 with fellow opener Nick Davies adding 55.

In reply, Anderson took 8-12 from eight masterful overs to reduce Guilsfield to 79 all out.

Llanidloes chalked up a seven-wicket win over Montgomery II, thanks largely to Dan Lewis who hit 70 as the hosts chased down Monty’s 167 target for the loss of three wickets.

Newtown II handed Bishop’s Castle their first defeat of the summer after veteran Paul Hawthorn took 5-12 to skittle the visitors out for just 102. The target was reached in the 28th over with four wickets lost.

Welshpool II made it a day to remember for the club with a win at Cae Glas in the Border Division. Callum Preston (49) and opener, Dave Whitehouse (44) helped them to 185-7 before they skittled their hosts out for 135. Rupert Redway took 5-15 and Warren Roberts claimed 3-22.
