Mont Cup set for pre-season start

23/06/2011 @ 02:18

The Montgomeryshire Cup is set for an August start as organisers bid to recapture the prestige of one of Wales’ oldest football competitions.

Crowds of 2,000-plus for the April Bank Holiday final were commonplace as recent as the early 1990’s, but that now seems a distant memory with the last two years falling into disarray.

The 2009-10 competition was not completed until January this year while the latest edition was blighted by high profile withdrawals by the likes of Caersws and Carno.

Managers have called for a re-think or to bin the competition all together as the British winters continue to wreak havoc on fixtures with the Montgomeryshire Cup seemingly at the bottom of the priorities.

But all that could change when the issue is debated at the annual meeting next Tuesday.

Secretary Bernie Jones said: “The time really has come to have a good look at how it is run and whether it is run at all. But there does seem a genuine wish for the competition to remain so it is up to us all to work together and come up with a timetable that suits. My suggestion is to play the first round the week before the football season starts in August with a final set for a date like Boxing Day.”

The meeting will be held at Llansantffraid Social Club alongside the AGM for the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire Amateur League which could be another interesting affair with a proposal to introduce a Mid Wales Reserve League.

On Monday, at Newtown’s Latham Park, the AGM for the Dave Smith Ladies League will be held.
