The Central Wales Football Association (CWFA) has told local clubs to go ahead with fixtures this weekend and said it won’t be pro-active in offering advice, instead it will follow the Government guidelines over Coronavirus.

In a statement issued this morning, the local governing body said it was monitoring the situation but saw no reason to cancel games after the UK Government said on Thursday that all sports events should go ahead.

This comes despite most of the world, including countries less affected, taking a more hardened stance and either cancelling events or holding behind closed doors. The English Premier League has also been suspended after players contracted the virus.

The CWFA said that “schools are not being closed and juniors running around outside in the fresh air is likely to be less risky than confinement in a class room” and that “generally speaking, ambulance staff, doctors and police officers do not attend our adult or junior fixtures so there is no direct risk to NHS or other emergency services through our local football events”.

“There will be concern that social gatherings of over 500 persons are now banned in Scotland but we do not have events that are likely to attract such large crowds,” the statement read.

“The important message at this stage is that any players, supporters, coaches, parents, club or match officials with a new and persistent cough and/or a temperature should not attend any local football events and training indoors should be avoided. If in doubt stay at home.”
