Local bowlers to spearhead Wales

13/06/2011 @ 06:28

Montgomeryshire bowling hotspot of Berriew will have three bowlers in the Wales ladies team looking to become British Champions this month, and they will be led by a Berriew team manager.

The Women’s line-up has been announced and includes local stars Caroline Taylor, Kathy Pearce and Isabel Jones and will be managed by Hazel Wilson to make Berriew the most represented club in the squad.

The tournament is being held on home soil at Llandrindod Wells from June 21 and will see the Welsh ladies face stiff competition from Ireland, Jersey, Scotland and England for the British Isles Championship trophy.

“We came second to Scotland last year after winning three of the four games but I believe we have a great chance of going one better this month,” said Hazel. “We are improving all the time, so I am hoping for great things on home soil. We have done more preparation than before and everyone is really positive.”

The team has been receiving plenty of advice and training not normally associated to bowling covering nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning and performance analysis.

“We are looking forward to playing in Wales and hope that we get lots of support because everyone is welcome to attend,” Hazel added: “We have had two practice games: the first against Montgomeryshire and Mid Wales men and lost by nine shots and the second was against a select women’s Welsh counties team and we won by 18 shots. Every team member is putting in lots of practice and receiving coaching sessions from the Welsh Bowls Coaches. We are feeling confident.”
