Anthony Batters Broseley

John Anthony (pictured batting) recorded personal best figures of 7-31 to decimate Broseley’s batting order and ease Newtown’s worries at the lower end of the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League.

Fellow strugglers Broseley inserted Newtown in to bat and Steve Davies and Dave Laird set a platform of 65 before Davies cut a loose half tracker straight to point. Out of sorts Putson followed for 0 but Dave Laird stood firm with some uncharacteristic big hitting for 34. Older brother Ally took over with a decent 23no, including a straight six off Mehboob (4-42) as Newtown finished on 181 from 46 overs.

Newtown started well, dismissing both Broseley openers for single figures with Craig Davies being his consistent self to finish with 2-35.

But Anthony entered the scene to bowl with real gusto and rip through the rest of the Broseley batting order, accounting for the big wicktes of Niazi (15) and Mehboob (10). His pace and accuracy saw him finish with staggering figures of 7-31 to see Broseley off for a meagre 84.

It was a massive victory for Newtown to put them in a confident frame of mind going into this weekend's battle with fellow strugglers Allscott.
