Christmas success for The Robins

Newtown ended 2019 n a high by completing Christmas unbeaten against Aberyswtyth.

The points have given The Robins a brilliant chance of securing a top-six spot in the JD Cymru League with the split just two games away.

Mwandwe put Newtown ahead at Park Avenue with only three minutes on the clock. But The Robins failed to put the game to bed and Matthew Jones looked to have earned a point for the Seasiders in the 83rd minute.

George Harry had other ideas though with a dramatic 93rd minute winner.

Llanrhaeadr staged an amazing New Year’s Day comeback to wion 5-3 at Rhyl in the Cymru North League.

The villagers looked dead and buried when trailing 3-0 at half time but scored five times in the second half to move up to third place.

First half goals from Ceri Owen (2) and Thomas Craemar meant Rhyl fans thought they were home and dry but they hadn’t bargained for the fighting spirit from Llanrhaeadr.

Matthew Williams (3), Richard Meredith-Thompson and Ian Mathews netted second half goals to seal an incredible victory for the villagers.

Guilsfield beat Penrhyncoch 3-1 with goals from Adam Davies (2) and Robbie James. Penrhyn, who finished the game with 10 men, replied through Ifan Burrell.

Llanfair are heading back to the Mid Wales League after losing 3-0 at Corwen. With only two points from 17 starts they are firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, 15 points adrift.
