Newtown bounce back

Newtown provided the shock of the day in Division Two, beating Shotton Steel at the Rec by 28-13.

After last week’s heavy derby defeat at Welshpool, this was the perfect response from Newtown, who now have the same points as their neighbours in the league table.

Welshpool, playing away at Mold in a Division Two North encounter, put in a battling performance against a side who are hotly tipped to return straight back to Division One at a canter after last season’s relegation.

Two Welshpool players ended up with a visit to Wrexham hospital after knocks, both thankfully in full recovery.

Pool restricted Mold to 15 points in each half, whilst scoring a dozen of their own to give a final scoreline of 30-12, and they will be glad to have got this game out of the way before they start looking for points of their own with games against Llanidloes (home) and Bangor (away) next up.

There was heartbreak for Llanidloes as visitors, Abergele, recorded their first victory of the season with a last play of the game try to snatch the win by 20-25. Llani would have expected to take the points with home advantage but Abergele’s never say die attitude saw them through to a memorable win.

In Division One North, COBRA and Denbigh played out a dour 12-12 game with both sides scoring four penalties each. The result leaves COBRA rooted to the bottom of the table and they will be looking to get points of some sort next Saturday when they visit Caernarfon who are just one place above them in the table.

On Sunday, COBRA Ladies got back to winning ways with an emphatic 55-0 win against Llangollen Ladies.
